Our plans to help the planet!
As a publisher of greeting cards for over 35 years we have proudly been at the forefront of design and innovation, using a mixture of traditional and modern finishes to ensure our cards are both tactile and beautiful. In order to keep these protected we, along with many others in the industry, have supplied our cards in individual clear polypropylene bags. This has been a staple of our business for a number of years and has allowed each card to stay pristine from production right through to the end consumer.

Recent TV programmes such as Blue Planet and now Our Planet however are highlighting the urgent changes that need to be made in all of our daily lives to ensure we work together to protect the environment for future generations.

"Since its invention some 100 years ago, plastic has become an integral part of our daily lives, but
every year some eight million tons of it ends up in the ocean, and there it can be lethal. While
filming Blue Planet II the crews found plastic in every ocean. Even in the most remote locations." –
Sir David Attenborough

As a leading publisher we feel a responsibility to keep pushing forward, not just with FSC and PEFC accredited board (which we proudly already use for our cards and envelopes) but now also in limiting the use of plastic across all areas of our business. We have carefully considered other wrapping alternatives, including compostable and biodegradable bags, but nothing currently offers a credible a solution. Aside from concerns with quality and perishability, there are on-going questions and uncertainty surrounding local recycling with the potential for all to still ends up in landfill or incineration.

Going forward, our intention is therefore to produce and supply all our cards without individual bags. During a period of transition you will continue to receive some wrapped stock from us as we endeavour to cause as little unnecessary environmental waste as possible. The only exception will be on our more delicate, handmade cards that would otherwise be vulnerable to damage in shop displays with no protection. These cards will continue to be individually wrapped using a recyclable polypropylene bag with minimal plastic content.

Future plans also include the introduction of an easy peel label, fixing an envelope with the individual card to avoid any separation or extra merchandising issues. As soon as this is available we will action immediately and begin to roll out across all our cards. We are also investigating alternatives to the plastic outer bags or bands currently in use for transit.

We appreciate your understanding during this transitional period and look forward to working with
you as we progress towards a more sustainable alternative to plastic.

A Royal Engagement!
On Wednesday, Paper Rose had the privilege of being asked to create an engagement card for Prince Harry and his new fiancé, Meghan Markle on behalf of BBC Radio Nottingham - which we were so excited about!

Our talented team of designers quickly began putting ideas together for a bespoke, hand-made card featuring a giant 3D engagement ring on a large scale. To make it personal to Prince Harry and Meghan, we featured small elements of text about their engagement in the ring design which was layered out of different holographic and glitter textures. Concertina pages were added in for everyone at BBC Radio Nottingham and Nottingham locals to write their well wishes.

When the day came to give the card to Prince Harry and Meghan, one of our designers Sarah, was there to present the idea behind the card on air with BBC Radio Nottingham before handing it over to their team to give to the royal couple upon their arrival in Nottingham.
Amazingly, we were able to see the card being given to the couple live on the news and they seemed very happy to receive it and passed on their thanks to us.

It was an exciting and challenging opportunity for our studio team to work on given the short time frame and we are very proud of everyone involved as it was a true team effort!

Big congrats to the royal couple- we hope you loved your card!

Christmas is that special time of year where we send out a card to send our good wishes for the year. Festive Friday is now in it's fourth year, driven by the Greeting Card Association it has become an iconic start to the postage of Christmas Cards.

The idea is that on the last Friday in November, it's a special day for everyone in the card industry (and all lovers of cards) to send their personal Christmas cards. We hope to create a great sparky first wave of beautiful cards arriving in the first week of December to get everyone in the Christmas card-sending mood!

Henries Nominations

With two of our ranges nominated for Henries awards this October we are over the moon! The countdown is on till we attend the event later this month in London.

Our ranges nominated include our On The Cards competition winner Prickly Situations, now in it’s second year, the aim of this greeting card design competition is to raise awareness within the student population of the vibrancy of the greeting card industry and to encourage the most talented and innovative designers into choosing greeting cards as a potential career path. The competition was launched last year for students with select universities, in conjunction with Paperchase, G. F. Smith, The House of Illustration, the Greeting Card Association, and Sherwood Press.

Our second nominee is more hip than the hippest of hipster humans; Toby LittleDude (aka Tobes) loves getting his thick rimmed specs on and showing his 100k+ Instagram followers his latest threads. This uber cool Maltese pooch oozes effortless style and sophistication and he’s never happier than when he’s soaking in the tub after a busy day playing on the beach... or drinking coffee in the local farmers’ markets.

With the Bollywood themed ball around the corner our invitations have been delivered to all nominees and attendees, this year the ticket was a collaboration between ourselves, Windles, Sound Tech and G.F.Smith, with out all of them this amazing light extravaganza of an invitation would not have been possible.
